Osoberry Indian Plum : Oemleria cerasiformis
One of the first to leaf out in the spring. Great shrub for wildlife which can reach an excess of 15 feet tall!
The fruits of osoberry are edible and resemble small plums which are dark blue when ripe. Fruiting is highly variable, with sunny locations producing more, larger, and sweeter fruits. The fruits can be eaten raw or cooked when bitter.
Indigenous peoples included osoberry in their diets, making a tea of the bark, and chewing its twigs to elicit a mild anesthetic and aphrodisiac. ;)
