Hairy Kinnikinnik : Arctostaphylos sp.
$8.00
As a trailing, evergreen shrub, this plant usually stays under two feet tall. It is long-lived and slow growing. Our variety of kinnikinnik appears to have hybridized with a hairy manzanita, giving it slightly larger and lighter green leaves than you get elsewhere.
Kinnikinnik is an Algonquin term meaning “smoking mixture”. It has a rich history with humans, as it is high in tannic acid and was a useful early medicine.
It will tolerate most temperature and moisture conditions, even thriving in dry, rocky soils. Kinnikinnik is a host plant for the Hoary Elfin butterfly.
